sleepy is what happens when i *could* take an afternoon nap.

tired is what happens after i work all day and am achy.

Like when you did too much walking and you can't get out of your chair right now, that's tired without being sleepy.

Insomnia is when you're tired but not sleepy.

You can be tired and thinking straight or about complex things; sleepy implies more cognitive disorganisation as I understand it.
